Longtime daily follower of the channel (since 2016) but I rarely comment. However I have to put up a defence of Garnacho here. The fanbase tends to expect too much from him, forgetting that he's only 20.
First point: being only 20, he has worked his way up to become a regular first team starter from scoring 2 goals in the FA Youth club final just 3 years ago. That deserves respect.
Second point: Our lopsided squad means that players like Kobbie, Nacho, Josh and Hojlund are being asked to shoulder way more responsibility than if we had a well balanced squad. This is a legacy of the Woodward and Glazer era of running things. To add to that, we should have had a senior player called Rashford who should have been the shield for these young boys. Instead, he gave an interview mid-season just weeks after Ruben joined where he announced his desire to leave. Instead of rolling up his socks and working hard until the the end of the season, he abandoned ship mid season leaving these young boys, especially Garnacho to shoulder the weight of wearing the shirt, when he should have been owning the responsibility. And we pay him upwards of £300k a week? Thanks a lot, Marcus.
Third point: Garnacho's decision making definitely needs improving, but we forget he's only 20. What I see is that he tries to take ownership of his responsibility i.e. he tries to affect the game. He gets into dangerous positions left or right, you can see how hurt he is when things don't go right for him. I see a young kid taking ownership of the weight of the red shirt, which for me is a sign of a player that will grow into something special. Very much like a young CR7. But in this age of immediate socmed reactions from so many media and fan outlets, we end up not giving the kids a chance to grow, develop and learn. CR7 didn't have to deal with this pressure when he was 20.
To conclude, as a fanbase perhaps we need to see the bigger picture of our squad weaknesses as a result of rubbish recruitment over years and the expectation being thrown on these kids as a result now. Trust in Ruben and give him a couple of solid windows. The right recruitment in certain positions can "release" players like Garnacho to be their best version. Selling Garnacho now is a step backwards in my opinion. Youth, courage, success. Let's keep the youth and show courage to start with.
The squad needs to be balanced between youth and experience. If you only buy players with potential, then the team will also only have potential. The one position that experience is needed is centre forward; to both guarantee goals and to help Hojland. I believe Gyokeres will be too expensive with transfer fee plus wages. That leave Oshimen as the outstanding candidate, it will probably put a spanner in the wage structure, but there is no perfect solution. I think a "swap" including Garnacho would be a very good deal, as I just think Garnacho is never going to provide the goals and assists needed from the no. 10 position.
