Manchester United took another big step towards Champions League football with a 2-1 win over Brentford at Old Trafford, one that leaves us needing only the smallest final push to make top five official.
Goals from Casemiro and Benjamin Sesko gave United the platform, even if the game itself never really felt comfortable enough. Brentford had plenty of the ball, plenty of pressure and enough chances to make it a much worse night, but United were clinical when it mattered and just about did enough to get over the line.
Not a perfect performance, but a massive result.
A Fast Start, Then A Much Harder Night
After the Leeds defeat, the main thing was the response, and to be fair, United gave exactly that.
The opening spell was excellent. Brentford could barely get out, the press was aggressive, and there was real purpose about everything we did. Casemiro’s opener after 11 minutes felt deserved, and it could easily have been more. Maguire went close himself, while Amad had a huge chance after a brilliant Kobbie Mainoo run that really should have ended in a goal.
That was the most encouraging part of the night. United did not drift into the game. They grabbed hold of it.
The problem was that Brentford gradually worked their way back in. United still had moments, but the control never lasted long enough, which made the second goal just before half-time so important. Bruno Fernandes delivered again, crossing for Sesko to make it 2-0 and move to 19 league assists for the season, just one short of the Premier League record.
Even at 2-0, though, the game still felt alive. Brentford had too much of the ball, too many openings, and United never really shut the door properly. Mathias Jensen’s late goal made the ending more nervous than it should have been, but the bigger point is that United still found a way through it.
Mainoo Was The Standout Again
Kobbie Mainoo was brilliant.
The obvious moment was that first-half run, which deserved a finish, but it was the rest of his game that stood out just as much. He kept carrying the ball, kept wriggling away from pressure, and looked like the calmest midfielder on the pitch by a distance.
At this point, his importance to the side is obvious. When he plays, United feel more balanced and more composed. When he is missing, the gaps show up straight away.
Casemiro deserves a mention here too. Not long ago it looked like his United spell might just fade away, but now he feels like one of the biggest reasons the club is about to get back into the Champions League. He got the opener, put himself about all night, and late on did all the ugly experienced-player things needed to drag the game over the line.

Next Steps
It is Liverpool next, so there is no gentle landing and no easy chance to coast over the line.
But this win has changed the feel of the run-in again. United now need only a couple more points to make Champions League football official, and after where this season once looked to be heading, that is no small thing.
