Almost all of united's issues can be traced back to the defense. Not just the leftback per say but the whole defense is really opposed to the style carrick wants to implement. The lack of confidence in the defense means that the wide attackers can not step up and press for the ball, this coupled with bruno's badly timed pressing triggers means that the team is really disjointed and struggles to maintain any sort of consistent out of possession structure.
The defense is not suited to play any sort of high pressing system much less a mid block to high press transitional style that is dependent on perfectly timed jumps(which we do not have the central attackers for) and good 1v1 defenders who can be relied upon if the press is bypassed(which we demonstrably lack). This combination manifesting itself as a lack of game control ability. Being able to press and counterpress is a pivotal part of game control as i see it, allowing a team to dictate the game without the ball. This means United can neither press their way out of opposition pressure nor defend in a deep block due to our wide defenders being really poor in 1v1 scenarios.
This mismatch puts carrick under a lot of pressure and unfairly so. The defensive issues could have been solved with 2-3 first team additions this summer but united have not bought in enough revenue to spend on both a midfield and defensive rebuild. Going into more debt is not an answer either, adding to the splurge on a center forward last summer. The leveraged buyout and subsequent poor purchasing decisions are proving to be a stab in the back followed by a thousand cuts for the club. This is deeply frustrating as a fan but there is no immediate solution for these problems and blaming it solely on the players or the coaching staff will only add to and amplify the toxicity harboured within the club for so long. This is disappointing none the less and we can only hope for a good performance in the champions league tie and build from there on.

I know Casemiro has ended up being remembered for his goals last season. But it isn’t easy replacing his defensive ability. His experience meant he was often in the right place, at the right time to make a tackle, block, interception, or clearance. Ultimately he was an elite DM for yeeeears, and not having that this season will cause “teething issues”.
It’s not that we can’t defend. We are not just good at the details. Two mistakes for the last goals, 1. how easily we got outnumbered in the left wing for the cross to come in when that was the only side Everton was attacking from after grealish came on. 2. Why is mazraoui kicking it out to the prime position outside the box, when he could have stretched a bit more and cleared it to either sides. It’s the details that cost you these games. We never learn.

I cannot fathom why 9 out of 10 times we shoot we sky it into row z and yet when we try to clear our lines we can't get our foot under the ball???
